A Swindon charity which received the 2024 King’s Award will now expand its plans to feed the town’s homeless, thanks to more funding from Swindon Borough Council.
Big Breakfast Plus, based at the Pilgrim Centre on Regents Street, serves up breakfast every morning for anyone homeless, hungry or just in need of community support.
The charity was recently awarded the King’s Award – the highest accolade a local voluntary group can be given – to mark its work serving up an average of 770 eggs, 770 rashers of bacon, 840 sausages and 50 litres of milk a week.
Following a £3,000 funding boost from Swindon Borough Council in September 2024, Big Breakfast Plus, which is run almost entirely by volunteers, was able to launch a trial scheme offering bags of fruit for its customers to take away with them after their hot breakfast.
The charity has previously relied almost entirely on donations.
Now, thanks to more funding from the Government Household Support Fund, this scheme has been made a permanent Friday feature.
“The five-a-day fruit scheme we ran last year was such as success, we’ve now been given some more funding and so have launched Fruit Friday,” said a spokesperson for Big Breakfast Plus.
“In our first week, we gave out 120 bags of fruit.
“Many thanks to the Government Household Support Fund administered by Swindon Council for funding this popular scheme for our guests.”
