Great British Steam Locomotives That Made History – The Story of Railways in Britain is written by local historian Dr Rosa Matheson.
She said: “From small beginnings in ancient times, the ‘magic of steam’ grew until it delivered to an incredulous world a magnificent machine – the steam locomotive – and what was to become a never-ending love story, began.
“Many believed the Age of Steam would die in 1960s, but the passion for these much-loved and admired locomotives, has ensured they live on in this 21st century.”
The book includes new research and discussions, as well as stories of the men who designed and created them, a look at the technology of the times and government interventions.
Dr Matheson will be signing copies at Highworth Information Centre on Saturday, September 27, and at the Swindon Story Shed RAIL 200 celebration on October 4/5.
The Rail 200 event marks 200 years since the launch of the Stockton and Darlington Railway which was the beginnings of passenger rail travel.
The event also features other authors, an exhibition, second-hand railway books, and the chance to build a cardboard-box locomotive and train.
